The Latest from the Spring Creek Library
We are happy to announce that we’ve received some new books in the library! Not only have some been purchased but we’ve had three large boxes of donations of nice quality books. We are working to get them cataloged and on the shelves for students as soon as possible.
This year our school has four teams of 17 fourth and fifth graders participating in the Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB) event. The mission of OBOB is to encourage and recognize students who enjoy reading, to broaden reading interests, to increase reading comprehension and academic excellence. Students also learn and practice cooperative teamwork. The library has multiple copies of the 16 books that are used in the battles. Participants must read at least 4 of the 16 books and many of our members have read most of the titles. Teams practice a few times per week and currently school battles are taking place twice a week. School battles last for a month and the team that has the most points will go on to battle Awbrey Park Elementary’s OBOB team. In March regionals take place at North Eugene High School. Many thanks and appreciation to Kayla Morgan, Elayna Habets and Keitra Broders, the volunteer parents who consistently practice with our students. Go teams!
This semester we have been fortunate to offer a once a week class to learn American Sign Language (ASL). Students have learned a lot and had fun learning the language. Soon the library will have more ASL books for students to borrow. The class created a bulletin board in the library about how words have meanings. If you are in school, please stop by the library to see. Thank you to all the staff and the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) program who worked with students in this class.
We are in need of adult volunteers to shelve and help repair books for the library. If you can commit even once a week for 20-30 minutes it will help to keep the books more available to students. If you can help, please contact any of these people: Heather in the front office, Dayna Mitchell at firstname.lastname@example.org or Debbie Delatte at email@example.com. We appreciate it!
